An original sixpence coin from Great Britain, dated 1955, is from the pre-decimal period. The sixpence was 1/2 of a shilling, which was 1/20 of a pound sterling. The coin design incorporates the leek, rose, thistle, and shamrock, which are the symbols of Wales, England (Tudor dynasty), Scotland, and Ireland, respectively.
The sixpence coin is a traditional wedding gift for a bride. As an old nursery rhyme goes, "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Sixpence for her Shoe." The tradition of gifting a sixpence to the bride dates back to the 1600's, when it was customary for the Lord of the Manor to give his bride a piece of silver as a gift, symbolically represented by a sixpence coin.
Coins from 1947 and after are made from a copper-nickel alloy. The original coin, with the first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, is over 60 years old. It has a size of 19.4mm (3/4 oz) and a weight of 2.83g (0.1 oz).
